Alturas is situated on the Pit River with a small population of 2827, most being born and bred Californians. If there is really something like perfect weather, you’re likely to find it in Alturas where the summers (although dry) reach swimming pool heights of 80°F. Interestingly, Alturas was not its’ first name. Reborn out of a Pit River, Achumawi village called Kosealekte or Kasalektawi, Alturas was originally baptized Dorris Bridge. It was given it's name when Jams Dorris and Pressley constructed a bridge just across the Pit River.
For a town with such a small population, it is astounding to note that there are numerous regional government offices situated within Alturas, such as the California Highway Patrol. It’s arguable that this fact has something to do with the low crime rate. There are practically no serious offences worth mentioning. Injustices mainly stay within the reach of those putting their fingers in pies that do not belong to them.
