It is not very often that one comes across a city that is famous for a prison, of all things, but Corcoran is famous for this very reason. The city is the site of the renowned all-male California State Prison, and the inmates account for roughly half of the city’s almost 15,000 residents. Corcoran is located in Kings County, about 46 miles south of Fresno, in an area that was first home to the Tachi Indians. There are two options as to where the city got its name. It is believed to have been named either after Thomas Corcoran, who was a railroad engineer, or after a San Joaquin Valley pioneer by the name of General Corcoran.

Despite the relatively small population, the city is by no means behind in meeting the auto-related needs of its residents.
