The development of Encinitas stretches back beyond a century of California history. The land on which it stands today traces its discovery to 1669 when the then Governor Gaspar de Portola attempted to expand the teaching and religious opportunities for the territory. Encinitas developed during the 1800s when in 1881 Jabez Pitcher made a legal claim for the town. The city itself got incorporated only as recently as 1986 and so happened as the five communities that co-exist in the surrounding area sought to combine themselves as such an entity. The city is primarily coastal, as six miles of it borders the Pacific sea. However, even with San Diego only twenty-six miles away to the north, and LA another ninety-five miles to its south they both have had little influence on Encinitas’ lifestyle. It boasts a tourist economy based on its major industry, horticulture. Nature lovers won’t be able to get enough of the 35-acre Quail Botanical Gardens. Unique to San Diego County, it contains exhibits that highlight both plants native to California, and non-indigenous wonders like a bamboo grove. The topography doesn’t lend itself to large beaches, but instead the high cliffs offer hiking trails and spectacular ocean panoramas. A championship golf course is also on hand.

Even with two main highways, I5 and the 101, an Encinitas auto parts business would lack potential viability due to the less than urban development and low population. A further case can eliminate businesses like Encinitas salvage yards on the basis that their space and content would be counter to the community ascetics and the many nature based industries. Encinitas junk yards may also clash with the residential feel the five districts have long cultivated.
