The city of Fremont began with the Spanish settlement of the area in 1797. Franciscan Father Fermin Lasuen started the San Jose Mission to bring Catholicism to the native Indians, the Ohlones, and this Mission was the start of the city. It was the 14th such mission in California. By the mid 1800s, as Americans moved west towards San Francisco, the function of the mission changed as John Freemont sought to provide passage for the homesteaders and carved a route through the mountains. The mission became a supply stop aiding the huge gold rush that was taking place. Its importance to settlers was evident as it gained a post office long before California’s statehood.
One of the town businessmen, Henry Smith, found himself in the State Assembly and advocated for his town’s development making what was then called Washington Township a center for all major activities. The next step to becoming a city happened after World War II. After the post war boom in California, Washington township took their future into their own hands to join with several other districts, those of Mission San Jose, Irvington, Niles, Centerville, and Warm Springs and incorporated Fremont in 1956. The aim was to stabilize growth and centralize operations previously split across them separately. Currently Fremont continues with a population of around 200,000, making it California’s 14th largest city.
Fremont’s industrial base is electronics manufacturing as it lies within the confines of American’s technological center, Silicon Valley. While Fremont salvage yards and Fremont junk yards might not seem at first as good business ideas for the area, further examination would say otherwise. Several auto manufacturers operate in Fremont, like General Motors and Toyota. There is more than enough population, over 6 million people, to support even a Fremont auto parts store as it is part of the San Jose/San Francisco/Oakland metropolitan area.
