Harbor City is a small business oriented city on the South Bay region. It is a historical city with many interesting places and buildings. It is a great place to live for families and provides outdoor activities to keep people of all ages occupied and entertained. Its educational facilities are widely ranged to meet the needs of all ages. The businesses in the area range from salvage and junk yards to top-notch auto sales companies.

History

Harbor City is on the southern side of Los Angeles. In 1789, Juan Jose Dominguez received the land now known as Harbor City by King Carlos the third. Back then it was a part of the Rancho San Pedro. It was later divided into two parts between the Spanish and the Mexican settlers. Years later, American immigrants received the land when the Mexican-American war ended.

In the early 1900's the leaders of the city decided that it would be best if only one group controlled the port and harbor. By then, however, the port was divided into two independent cities called San Pedro and Wilmington. In 1906 the leaders of the two cities each wanted full control of the port. To solve this problem, they purchased a stretch of land that connected the two cities to the port and named the two parts Harbor City and Harbor Gateway.

Entertainment

There are a number of outdoor parks in the area where families and small groups can enjoy themselves. It is home to the Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park where there is a baseball diamond and a bicycle path. It is also ideal for outdoor barbecue parties with the barbecue pit. There is also a soccer field, a jogging path and a lake. The Harbor City Recreation Center also has entertainment facilities. There are lighted indoor and outdoor basketball courts, picnic tables, a senior center and children's play area.

Schools and Businesses

Harbor City is considered a primarily business city. It offers little diversity in school choices but a few business opportunities. There are two elementary, two middle schools and two community colleges in the area. There is also a library which serves about twenty-four thousand people.

The Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Harbor City houses many medical facilities including a hospital. Crown Auto Salvage, AMC Auto Salvage and Alameda Recycling and Metals meet the salvaging, junk yard, and recycling needs of the area. They recycle auto parts, metals, steel, appliances, and plastic. There are many auto dealers in the area, two of which are the Mercedes-Benz of Long Beach and Macias Cadillac.

The intriguing historical harbor city leaves much to be desired in terms of tourism. It is near the port so many businesses are able to have their goods easily shipped to them. This accounts for the large number of automobile companies in the area. The school system in the area and the entertainment facilities make Harbor City a simple business hub.
