Highland is in San Bernardino county. The city is 4 miles east of San Bernardino and 16 miles north-east of Riverside, all in California. As Highland is bordered by a metropolitan area, it is a lovely tourist vacation for nature lovers.  The city is known for its high educational reputation. Most of its schools are known as a “California Distinguished School.”

History

The Spanish explorers discovered the area in 1772 and formal settlement was established in 1856. The area was known for its vitalizing and medicinal springs and therefore Henry Rabel built bath houses and a small hotel for these early visitors coming to the area. The peak of this booming tourism industry was after the construction of Harlem Spring in 1877. The Serrano Indians moved from the area following orders from the government.

The North Fork water ditch was the main irrigation channel providing water for the nearby orange groves. The agricultural industry thrived because of the Santa Fe railroad. This railroad was constructed in 1881. Due to the heavy forestry in the area, a lumber company made business from this natural resource.
