Junk Yards in Lamont, California

Lamont is an unincorporated community located in California’s fifth most populated county-Kern County. Lamont is readily identifiable on a map for being next to the city of Bakersfield. Founded in the year 1923, Lamont saw the advent of migrants primarily from Oklahoma in the 1930’s during the Great Depression, many of whom had come to California in search of a better life away from the arid extremes of their former homes. During most of the following two decades, the population was mostly white until the Latino migration took place. Lamont’s current population marginally exceeds fifteen thousand with the dominant racial group being Hispanics, and although the white population is the second largest, its numbers are approximately one-eighteenth of the Hispanic population.

Lamont is served by the Weed Patch Highway, which passes directly through the community as its main street.  Along this corridor are found many of the business places, including two of Lamont’s auto parts dealers:  Carquest Auto Parts and AutoZone. Lamont’s salvage yard is C & S Auto Recycling. and other junk yards are located in neighboring Bakersfield. This is not surprising as retail trade is not a key industry there, Lamont’s key industry is agriculture and the greater number of its workforce is employed as agricultural workers.

The closest hospitals to Lamont are the Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Mercy Hospital and San Joaquin Community Hospital, all in Bakersfield. In terms of education, Lamont offers elementary, middle and high schools. Tertiary institutions are outside of Lamont in Bakersfield, Lancaster and Santa Clarita. The Kern County Sheriff Department takes care of the community’s security since Lamont does not have a municipal government of its own. The sheriff station is located along the Weed Patch highway on the outskirts of the town.

Lamont offers limited attractions, but places of interest while in Lamont are chiefly parks: the Lamont Park, which is a picnic facility, and Bear Mountain Recreation and Park, which is an amusement park with amateur sport facilities.
