As with most towns in California, strife and triumph over the harsh odds that humanity often faces litters the history of Mission Viejo. The city began life as part of a 52,000-acre property named Rancho Mission Viejo, owned by the Spanish in 1769. The land changed hands in 1821 as Mexico secured independence from its Spanish overlords. As fortune would have it, an Englishman by the name of John Forster married the sister of the then Mexican governor and secured three ranchos including that of Mission Viejo. In attempting to urbanize the area, he bankrupted himself, forcing a sale. The land then fell into the hands of Richard O’Neill. An Irish cattleman by trade, he purchased Rancho Mission Viejo along with another property, Rancho El Trabuco, in 1907.
Mission Viejo would then return to its roots as started by Forster in 1963. By 1965, 10,000-acres owned by the Mission Viejo Company gained County approval, transforming it from cattle production area into a planned community. This concept of a balance between social and commercial necessities garnered Mission Viejo the honor of World Class Community in 1986. It was the first American city to win the award. In 1984 its world-class abilities got put to the test when it successfully hosted an Olympic event, long distance bicycling. Four years later, Mission Viejo gained city status.
Having Mission Viejo salvage yards and Mission Viejo junk yards are possibilities despite a city centered on more high-end industrial activities. Mission Viejo does claim a business-friendly demeanour, even going so far as to not even require fees for a business license. Even smaller opportunities in automotive services, like a Mission Viejo auto parts store, would be welcome by its 100,000 inhabitants. There is further customer potential via connections to other major California cities, such as San Diego, and through Mission Viejo’s excellent road and railway network.
