Montebello means "Beautiful Mountain" in Italian, and Spanish. The city was once an agricultural community and was well-known for producing vegetables, fruits, berries and flowers. The discovery of oil on the Baldwin and Temple properties in 1917, by the Standard Oil Company, revolutionized the face of Montebello.
