The city of Moorpark was founded by Robert Poindexter in the year 1900s. Many historians believe that the city was named by Admiral Lord Anson because of his ownership of Moore Estate in Hertfordshire.

Since apricots were very popular in the city, there are many people of the view that the name Moorpark was derived because of the popularity of the Moorpark Apricots, which were plentiful in the region. Others have it that the name came about when railroad experts that were surveying the area for railroad expansion were captivated by the city's sloping hills and called it Scottish Moors, which was later preferred to the name Moorpark.
