Newark

In homage to the castle in Scotland’s Port Glasgow, the name Newark was conceptualized. Newark gained recognition for being a salt producing center in the 1850's, which gave it some economic stability. It then later developed the South Pacific Coast Railroads, which were constructed by Alfred Davis and Jim Fair. Following the railroad construction, several developments followed, such as railroad shops, a station, hotels, local stores and facilities for manufacturing. Newark also made itself home to the trade of railroad car manufacturing, and was seen to later join forces with the city of Fremont. This alliance, however, was short-lived as the community was not in agreement with Newark's goal of becoming the industrial center of Fremont. In 1955, the city of Fremont was incorporated.

Activities and Attractions

Newark hosts many attractions and events, such as Newark Days, which is a very popular event.  Newpark Mall is a much sought-out destination for shoppers.  Summer concerts hosted by The Grove is another popular event, and the historic Ardenwood Farm draws visitors by maintaining a Victorian style mansion with a fully functional farm. 
Outdoor frolicking is made possible in Newark by the many parks in within the city. Hiking trails are provided by the Mission Peak Region and Coyote Hills trails. For those in search of less physically demanding outdoor activities, San Francisco Bay and the Don Edwards are suggested, each hosting a variety or birds and plant life for observers of nature.
