Sejat was the name given by Native Americans who inhabited the land that eventually became the city of Pico Rivera. The city itself got its name from the two towns that sprung up in the area, Pico and Rivera, in the 1880s. Their development was fed by the access created by the several railroad lines built at the time. The four companies, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, along with Atchison and Topeka, allowed the primary industry of both towns to prosper. The rest of California could partake in the fresh produce from Pico Rivera’s agricultural base. Nestled between two rivers, San Gabriel and the Rio Hondo, the surrounding land was more than fertile enough to support and grow high quality fruits like oranges in the volume the rest of the state needed.

That access would again come into play after World War II. With the huge influx of wartime industry into California, and returning veterans seeking houses, the gentle farmlands of Pico and Rivera were targets for residential real estate. The 1950s saw the homes go up, alongside the relevant community support systems like schools and businesses to service the new clientele. The rapid expansion brought the towns together and a decision via a local election made centralization official. January 7th, 1958 had the two towns combined into one city, that of Pico Rivera making it the 61^st city in Los Angeles County.

As time passed, further increases in development have annexed other, smaller areas giving Pico Rivera a population of around 65,200 people within its current nine square-miles. Given its more residential nature a Pico Rivera auto parts store would be a better business bet over Pico Rivera salvage yards or Pico Rivera junk yards, as even with the available land space neither would fit in with the general commercial ambience.
