History

Juan Ontiveros acquired the area in 1837 through a land grant given by the Mexican governor who controlled the region at that time. This land grant covered other areas as well as Placentia. However, the small area known as Placentia today emerged after a series of purchases of lands around the area by English pioneers in 1865. Sara Anne McFadden was an early settler who gave the area its name. Placentia derives from a Latin word which means “a pleasant place.” The people of this small town are pleasant people indeed. The city reports a low percentage of property crime on an annual basis. Their main agricultural products are avocados, grapes and walnuts.
