The city of Pleasanton is a part of Alameda County, California.  It is in the Tri-Valley region of Northern California's Bay Area. The city was incorporated in 1894. It is about 40 miles east of San Francisco, and is a suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Pleasanton has a population of approximately 70,285. The Census Bureau ranked it the wealthiest middle-size city in the U.S. in 2005, and 2007. The city was also ranked number sixty-three in CNNMoney.com's list of "The Best Places to Live" in 2010. Forbes magazine named Pleasanton one of "America's Top Hometown Spots" in the U.S. in 2009.

In its early days, Pleasanton was an agricultural center for the Amador Valley. The area's rich soil made it suitable for agriculture. The area became famous internationally for its hops, which were sought after by beer producers. The city is home to the Pleasanton Racetrack, which is the oldest horse race track in America. After the mid-twentieth century, the city started to attract retail and commercial developers and, by the mid-1980's, became one of California's fastest growing cities. Although Pleasanton is a major job center and is constantly attracting many corporations and businesses, the city still has a family aura and small town feel.
