The discovery of San Bruno happened in 1775, when Captain Bruno Heceta landed on the western side of San Francisco, California. He named the area on the peninsula Mount San Bruno. Sometime during the 1820s the Mexican government handed the title of the San Bruno lands to Jose Antonia Sanchez. After the United States took over California in 1848 it changed hands to Darius Mills, who had founded the Bank of California. San Bruno continued to see ownership changes throughout its early history.

As the town was a major transportation crossroads between the cities of San Francisco and San Jose, Richard Cunningham took advantage of it. As the railroad agent, he built a hotel along with the way-station to service the traffic flowing through San Bruno. It worked, and the town slowly transformed from a stopover spot into a leisure center for the inhabitants on either end of the railroad's destinations.

The large wilderness that was San Bruno evolved into agricultural industries as ranches dominated its landscape to partake in the lucrative business of supplying San Francisco with necessities such as milk, horses, and fresh meat. The town wasn't incorporated until 1914, and like much of California, kept its relatively low population of 1,400 until after World War II. It wasn’t affected by the industrialization, but by the fact that the US Army used the area heavily until the end of the war, which swelled its numbers to 35,000. Since then, growth has only been up to around 41,000. The numbers are good with a well-to-do diverse population, of which 86% drive. However San Bruno salvage yards and San Bruno junk yards might have a problem with such upscale customers and the lack of suitable land space for such a project.
