The city of San Jacinto is in Riverside County, California. The city got its name after Saint Hyacinth, and is located at the northern end of the San Jacinto Valley, with the city of Hemet to the south. It is in a valley associated with the San Jacinto Mountains. The city has a population of approximately 44,199.
The city was founded in 1870. Incorporation as a city took place in 1888, which means that the city is one of the oldest in Riverside County. Incorporation took place even before Riverside County was formed. The city was home to dairy farms, and was also an agricultural center.
San Jacinto is a part of the proposed Mid County Parkway, which will link the San Jacinto Valley with the cities of Corona and Riverside. This parkway will be a sixteen mile transportation corridor, and is expected to ease traffic congestion.
The original settlers were Native Americans, who went by the name Luiseno, a name given to them by the Spaniards. They gave them this name because of their proximity to the Mission San Luis Ray de Francia. In 1883 the modern city of San Jacinto was laid out at Five Points by the San Jacinto Land Association. Soon afterward, the railroad arrived in 1888. The economy was based on agriculture and, to a lesser extent, tourism, and many visitors came to the area to visit the hot springs.
