Sylmar is one of the many districts found in the San Fernando Valley of California.  It was once the place where you could find the second largest olive groves in the world.  This is where the name Sylmar was derived.  It is named “silver sea” as this is what the olive groves looked like when looking at them from the mountains and the surrounding hills.  Sylmar is the combination of the English and Spanish word silver.  Olive cultivation thrived in Sylmar due to the similar climate and soil that is found in Europe.

The area of Sylmar is mostly flat land with steep hills that form the San Gabriel Mountains.  This area experiences dry, sunny weather, and it is extremely rare for it to snow in Sylmar.  The valley does not normally suffer from smog, but occasionally in the summer there will be a concentration of smog presented due to urban pollution.

The population was estimated in 2008 to be 79,614, and the community is a diverse one.  According to the census done in 2008, 70% of the population are Hispanic.  Here, most of the residents are owners of the homes they live in.

Sylmar is also known have had a number of disasters.  The most notable as the 1977 earthquake, also known as the San Fernando earthquake, which killed 65 people.  In 2008, there was a huge wildfire, known has the Sayre fire, that destroyed about 500 homes.
