Terminal Island is am island located in Califonia.  It is connected to mainland by three bridges that allow movement to and from the island. The name Terminal Island was given to the island by the Spanish. The population of the island is 1,467 people.  Before the name Terminal Island ,the island was called Rattlesnake Island .  The land area of the island is 11.56 km square.

The name was changed to Terminal Island in 1918.  The island was inhabited by Japanese after World War II.  They lived in a place called East San Pedro.  After the attack on Pearl Harbor,, all of the adult males were arrested and imprisoned while the other inhabitants were forced to leave the island within 48 hours.

Because of the location of the island, it was quite isolated from other places. The people of the island were forced to develop their own culture as well as dialect.

In 1971, the Terminal Islanders Club was formed. This club organizes many events, and even planned a memorial there for their forefathers.

There was  a civilian air facility constructed on the island in 1927.  The name of the Facility was Allen Field. The Naval base on the island was shut down in 1947.

The site of the US naval base is now covered by a large industrial facility. The two major landowners on the island are the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach.  They lease much of their lands to bulk terminals and container terminals.

The island also contains a Federal prison, shipyard and Coast Guard facilities. The Long Beach Shipyard was shut down in 1997.  This shipyard occupied almost half the island.
